“Faith in humanity,” is what ESPN’s Randy Scott said he has after seeing the warm interaction between New Mexico United defender Kyle Colonna and an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs.
During a flight to Denver, Colorado, Kyle Colonna, struck up a conversation with Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs were headed out to Denver to see their granddaughter graduate, and Colonna and his teammates were going to play in a USL Championship game.
Y’all know how you meet someone, you like them, you two go your separate ways and then you say, “I should’ve gotten their number,” and then fate steps in and you see them again?! That is what happen with the Jacobs and Colonna. After they made it to Denver, they said goodbye and went on their separate ways but not without the thought of how nice of a person the other is. The conversations between Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs and Colonna and one of his teammates most likely went something like:
“He’s such a nice young man. I should’ve gotten his number and
given it to our Chrissy. Are you trying to get an Uber, dear?”
"Huh?"
"Are you trying to Uber? There’s junior right there."
"Oh, I didn’t see him. Here’re the bags, son."
"You know, that young man was nice. His mother did a good job."
"Do you know them?"
"I sat next to them on the plane. They were really nice. They
remind me of my granddad and nanna."
As fate would have it, the nice young man and the gentle ol’ couple would meet again on the plane. After everyone boarded the flight back to Albuquerque, Colonna noticed Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs seated not too far away from him. In the seat next to them was one of his teammates. Colonna asked his teammate if he would switch seats with him.
The teammate was most likely like, “Sure, man, as long as you all
are cool with it?”
And Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs were most likely like, “He’s a nice young
fella.”
Colonna sat down next to his new friends and began talking about the game, the Jacobs’ grand-daughter’s graduation, and just the happenings around town. This time around, before everyone said their byes, they made sure to exchange phone numbers. “She’s someone that I could always kind of go to if I want a home cooked meal in a place that I’m not really from,” is what Colonna told Brianna Wilson of KOB.
Colonna is from Danville, California, which, according to Google Maps, is a 16 hour 6 min drive to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Colonna graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Civil Engineering, and he’s been a member of the New Mexico United team since March 14th of this year.
